ABOUT

Júlia Machado is a Copenhagen-based Brazilian filmmaker and visual artist working across photography, video, and installation. She holds a practice-based PhD in Film and Media from Aarhus University, where she is currently a guest researcher, following a postdoctoral fellowship in Visual Arts at the Fine Arts School Postgraduate Program at UFRJ, Rio de Janeiro.

Her work explores the poetic, material, and performative potential of images, navigating the boundaries between documentary and fiction, while dislocating perception and engaging with the co-creation of the real. More recently, her practice has expanded toward the essayistic frontiers between still and moving images.

She was awarded an OCIC Honorable Mention at the Rio International Ethnographic Film Festival for City of Youth (A Cidade dos Jovens, 2006) and received the Special Jury Prize at the Short to the Point Festival for Paradise (2016). Her work has been shown at film festivals and exhibitions in Brazil and across Europe.
